Website usage

To our talented webmasters thank you for all your effort in developing and getting the website up and running. From the most recent bulletin there seems to be a concern with the usage of the club website. I have a question and this is not meant to be a slight, what compelling reason would I have as a member to login to the site on a regular basis? After reading Scott’s bulletin I did login hence my comment and posting. What I did find after cruising through the site is that the information is dated therefore raising the question why would I login?

All the information typically comes to the members  Scott’s terrific bulletins. If the bulletins were only posted to the website I believe that would create a great furor as I suspect some members only use their computers for receiving and sending emails thus cutting off access to the bulletin therefore creating the dilemma, to use the website or not.

I do believe the website provides great information to those from outside the club who happen to be surfing the net and happen to type in Gyro Club on a search engine. Anyway I do not have the answer to increasing the usage, some will use the site and some won’t.

Trap Shooting Night

Our newest member Greg Clarke was able to overcome the wind & the cold to dethrone our long time trap shooting champion Bill Carter by hitting 18 “birds” to Bill’s 17. Congratulations to both of you. Doug Cromie (Jim Copeland’s son in law) was the best Gyro guest hitting 13 clay discs. A big thank you to Sid Slade, Bill Austin, and Peter Sachatsky for the great barbeque steak supper. Oh, cannot forget the fantastic carrot cake they served for dessert. Also, thanks to Gary Kleebaum onto chairman for the evening. If you only could have ordered a little better weather, Gary.

2014 Elections

May 2014 Election Bulletin

I cannot believe that the Gyro year is close to coming to the break for summer. With this in mind it also means, among other activities, that the club elections are right around the corner.

The club elections are handled by an Election Committee. This committee is made up of the Immediate Past President acting as chairman together with the current President and Vice President. It is the responsibility of the committee to seek nominations from the membership for two (2) 2 year Director positions and a Vice President. Another responsibility is to organize the election meeting on May 28, 2014.

Over the past couple of years the process of securing nominations has changed from what it used to be. There was and still is a feeling among some members that the commitment level requires more work than some are willing to commit to for 2 or 3 years depending on the position. For this reason and others the process has been changed.

Since January 2014 the committee has been talking to members with the hope that they will let their name stand in nomination for one of the three positions. The committee is pleased to inform the membership that we have 2 members who have agreed to let their name stand in nomination for the 2 Director positions and 1 member has agreed to let his name stand in nomination for Vice President.

Director – Rick Craddock and Peter Sachatsky
Vice President – Bill Austin

Having these names published and put forward in nomination for these positions does not mean that nominations are closed. In fact, nominations for these positions can be received by the Election Committee from now until election night.

I would encourage each member to seriously consider letting their name stand for one of these 3 positions. As you will read in upcoming bulletins, President Lawrence mentions his experience on the Board and that the work involved is not as time consuming as many in the club are led to believe.Talk to Lawrence or Ray personally to get first hand knowledge of the work and the time requirement involved on the Board of the club. I mention them because they both have taken active roles serving first as Directors and are now currently on the Board of the club. If you are interested in letting your name stand in nomination or you would like further information please contact one of the following 3 individuals.

Lawrence Zalasky or phone 780 467-4714
Ray Davis or phone 780 467-5258
Don Greig or phone 780 467-7422

Yours in Gyro,
Don

Look what Jim, the Easter Bunny, brought you

Jim and Rita Malott have just offered up a fantastic item for our auction (see below). I am forwarding this now so that Gyros and their corresponding Gyrettes can discuss this opportunity, hit the calculator and calendar and come up with your bidding strategy.
Scott

Rita and I are putting a “Belize Package” in the auction this year. Accommodation and guide service in Belize.

It will consist of 2 weeks accommodation in the Master Bedroom of our (Malott’s & Dootjes) 1650 sq ft condo which is located in Placencia, Belize about 30 feet from the Carribean. We have a car there so will be able to chauffer the winning couple from watering hole to watering hole as well as see a few sights. It is more of a relaxing vacation to be taken in the winter as opposehd to the gogo Tour of Portugal. See the website Los Porticos Villas for more information. Also see attached for view from our balcony.
Full Retail price for this would be about $3,500. in high season.

Spring Weight Challenge

Hello All, hope the winter was good to all of you. Lynn and I have come back from our time in Indio and are looking forward to spring and summer here in the Park. Unfortunately, I feel that I may have not pushed myself away from the table too often while we were away and desperately need to lose a few pounds. But I need some encouragement to help me along the way. My competitive nature is my way of getting that encouragement so I thought that maybe some of my friends are in the same spot as I am and could use a challenge to help get healthier.
So on that note I have devised a two month weight loss challenge that of course will cost some coin to make it more interesting and encouraging.
Here is what I propose:
•         Start – April 30th for 2 months (9 weeks)
•         Contestants put $25 into the kitty at the start
•         Everyone weighs in every Wednesday using a scale of their choice (but you need to use the same scale, at the same time of day)
•         Contestants email their weekly weight to a central point (Ray – keeper of the spreadsheet) and the percentages lost is published (NOT the actual numbers)
•         Rather than being “booted”, the contestant with the lowest weekly percent weight loss (or highest gain) puts in $5 to the kitty.  You have to weigh in every week, or I’ll just                    charge you the $5 anyway
•         Winners:  The person with the highest percent weight loss for the 9 weeks will get 70% of the kitty, 2nd place will get 20% and 3rd place will get 10% (that’s assuming we get        3 players)
An email will go out every Wednesday night to those participating summarizing the % weight loss (pounds lost divided by the previous weeks weight).  The final result is the % loss from the original weigh-in number. Weigh-in day will be April 30 when you will e-mail me your first weight (in pounds not stones). Please let me know by Monday April 28th if your interested. I will do the first e-mail on April 30th letting everyone know who is in the challenge, then May 7 with the first results and the first one to pay the piper for being the lowest % loser. Final weigh-in day will be June 25th after which the winners will be declared. I know a lot of you do not need to lose weight or may not want to participate for other reasons but I wanted to included all my gyro friends in the offer anyway.
So who is in?
Jennie Craig and Dr. Bernstien need not apply!

 Cheers Ray

November update on the Health & welfare of our Club.

Barrie Pratt has knee problems and is now walking with the aid of a cane. More seriously though he has a pain which he first thought was a heart attack. That was discounted but the pain is still there in and around his stomach area. Right now he does not know the reason for his discomfort. Barrie is scheduled for more tests in early December so hopefully he will find the answer to his problem. Since late summer he has lost 46 pounds so hopefully he can find an answer since the weight loss was not planned.

Rae Graham  is very positive about his prostate cancer. He has had 5 radiation treatments with more to come. Pat (his wife) is at home and doing well according to Rae with physiotherapy she is receiving for her hip replacement.

Jim Roberts a former member of our club and a Past International President of Gyro who now resides in North Vancouver with his wife Jean and also usually winters in Palm Springs. In mid October Jim had a heart attack and had 2 stents put in however shortly after he was still experiencing some pain so another operation was required. On November 4th Jim had bypass surgery and was released from the hospital this past Sunday. I talked to Jean yesterday afternoon, Jim was resting, and she said he is doing well but tires easily. Hopefully quite soon he will be put on a walking regimen which will help get him fully back to feeling better. I asked Jean to pass on to Jim the clubs good wishes and that we are all thinking about them at this time.

Now some good news!

Roger Delveaux had a hole in one on the 5th hole on San Gorgonio one of the Mountain Vista courses at Sun City Palm Desert. The 147 yd hole (gold) is a plateau green hidden behind a trio of sand traps. This happened for Roger on Remembrance Day (Nov 11) one day before his big birthday. He won’t forget this day. Congratulation Roger.

Ray
