Get Well wishes for Scott

Spring tulipsSorry to hear of your encounter with Alberta’s Health Care System, Scott. Isn’t it reassuring to know that it is there when you need it. Here is a Get Well Wish from Eleanor and I and since I understand the ground is still covered in snow; a reminder of what is eventually to come.

Diane Porter celebrates her 70th Birthday

Diane Porter celebrated her 70th birthday today here in Mesa. The day started off with Doug serving Little Kiss Cocktails (see the recipe below) to Diane’s aqua-fitness class at 8:15 this morning. This afternoon 70 people (including a special surprise guest — the Porter’s daughter Karen from Ardrossan) gathered to celebrate this milestone occasion in their backyard. The afternoon included bean bag toss, square dancing, pizza, chicken wings, birthday cake, and lots of friendship.

Gyro Gleanings from Palm Springs – by The Bradleys

For those of you who have been snowbirds in the past, you know that in a blink of an eye, a week has passed and you are looking a new one in the face knowing you are going to be equally as active as the one before.

For those of you who have not been snowbirds, there is no way we can convince you that we are not laying about, in fact we actually dream about laying about, doing nothing!  Having said that, we love everything we do so there are no complaints here.  We always have good intentions of going for daily walks, maybe to the gym or an aquasize class but sometimes those are tossed aside as well.

Jan and I arrived in a weakened state three weeks ago and Bill and Norma Austin’s sunny smiles were a very welcome sight when we got off the airplane.  Having driven down here in the fall, we didn’t need to make the trip by car as so many of our snowbird friends do the first part of January.  It sounds like other than Alberta, which was such a frozen mess; the roads were pretty kind to everyone making their way south. Gyro Whist Night

Seven tables of Gyros and Gyrettes whisted away the evening on January 8th after a gigantic and delicious meal provided at the GCCC that included shrimp, scampi and a whole lot of fine mystery stuff. The event was organized by Earl Korber and Frank Picard. The complicated table shuffling formula was skillfully interpreted by Lee Korber. At the end of the night two gender specific winners emerged. Carol Kleebaum took the Women’s honours and Al Bleiken was the studly male champion. A huge thank you goes out to the Picard and Korber team for a fine evening.

2014 President’s Christmas Address

By Lawrence Zalasky President
December 15, 2013

The Gyro Club of Sherwood Park was chartered on October 4, 1975 when 30 members were inducted. Today we are privileged to still have Augie Annacchiarico, Terry Bajer, Rikke Dootjes, Barrie Pratt, Ed Shultz, and John Williams as members in our club.

Although chartered on October 4, President John Quinlan organized the first Presidents Christmas event in December of that year which took the form of a cocktail party hosted at his home.

The cocktail hors d’oeuvres party format continued at the home of the President until about 1986/87 when it became a dinner party still hosted at the Presidents home.

Stories I’ve heard suggest that many Gyros thru the years struggled to get home from those home parties and even today aren’t entirely sure how their home coming occurred except through stories that abound.

As the membership grew so did the need for a larger facility for the Presidents dinner. In 1990/91 the event moved to The Millwoods Golf Course, then to a variety of venues like the Norwood Legion, the Strathcona Legion, the Sawmill/H & G Catering Bldg on 76 ave, etc. before Al Beiken secured and settled us into the German Canadian Cultural Club in 2001. Each year since, we’ve held the December Presidents Dinner as well as our regular meetings at this venue. Continue reading
