Summer Picnic – report
The Sherwood Park Gyros & Gyrettes gathered at the home of Bernie and Brenda Kropp for their annual summer picnic. Sid Slade presented a bouquet of flowers to Brenda in appreciation for hosting.
District VIII Governor Alan Pentney presented 2015 Gyro Internation Best Website award to Jim Copeland & Ray Davis. He also presented a plaque commemorating the Club’s 40th anniversary which officially takes place on October 5th.

Following an afternoon of visiting and games, Sid Slade barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs to accompany the salads & deserts that those in attendance provided. Jim Copeland knowing his emotions would get the better of him asked Ray Davis to present the following speech in accepting the best website award.
“Thank you Governor Allan for accepting this award on our behalf at the Gyro International Convention in June.
This award recognizes all the effort that the “team” put in to developing the website that we have today.
Let me emphasize that it truly was a team effort; starting with, the late Doug Porter. It was Doug that encouraged then president Lawrence Zalasky and his executive to define what they wanted the website to do. Thanks fellows for all your efforts. I know that many of you simply said get the job done. However, it was Doug’s experience and expertise that recognized the need for your input if we were going to develop a website that would be used. Doug dedicated over 200 hours of time and effort to get us where we are today.
And, thank you to Ray Davis for stepping up as the newest member of our team. Ray has taken over the role of Webmaster freeing up my time for other endeavors.
There is a danger in doing a good job. Governor Allan has asked if I would renovate the District VIII website. Now I need your help. Please take a look at district8.gyro.ws and pass on your comments as to what I have done right and more importantly what is wrong or missing. I need all of you to join the team that designs this new website.
Thank you to Gyro International for recognizing the importance the social media plays in our lives today.”
To add to Jim’s post Onto Chair Sid Slade provided this report.
On Saturday, August 29th, 58 people congregated at the residence of Bernie & Brenda Kropps for our Annual Gyro BBQ. Everyone pitched in with an appetizer, salad or dessert, however we were unable to consume all of the goodies provided. In addition to the goodies brought to the gathering there were hamburgers, hot dogs & smokies provided. Needless to say everyone thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and some the early evening of conversation and catching up of the summer events. Special presentations were presented to Jim Copeland (Best Gyro Website) and the upcoming 40th Anniversary of the Sherwood Park Gyro Club. These presentations were made by Allan Pettney – District VIII Governor. Special thanks to the Kropps for their hospitality and backyard for this special event.

Possible Cancellation of the Kid’s Christmas Party for 2015
Due to the following analysis, a motion will be voted on at our Annual General Meeting on September 2nd. :
- Only three years ago, total attendance at the Party was about 200;
- 2014 attendance was only 65 with 27 children and 11 members with their guests;
- Projected cost to the club this year will be about $1,500 including a new “venue charge”.
If we vote to do the Kids’ party this year, we have reserved the Broadmoor facility for December 6th.
Please discuss this situation with family members and be prepared to vote yea or nay on September 2nd.

Web Site – Well Done
We just received the news from District VIII Governor Alan Pentney that Sherwood Park Gyro won the international award for our web site. All the hard work, effort, and time put in by Doug Porter and Jim Copeland has been worth it (See Alan’s note below). Congratulation Sherwood Park Gyro and particulaily Jim Copeland and posthumously Doug Porter.
Hello Jim
I believe you are responsible for managing the Sherwood Park website to make it as professional in format as it is. I know there are many contributors that make this a great site to learn information about your club and Gyro in general. It is with great pleasure that I congratulate you and the Sherwood Park Club on being awarded the Gyro International Best Website Award for 2014-15.
I received this on your club’s behalf at the Annual General Meeting in Buffalo NY. I could mail it if you like or deliver it in August. I plan to be in Edmonton on August 28 (Friday) for business. I also may be in Edmonton earlier to meet with gyro clubs if it can be arranged.
Yours in Gyro Friendship
Alan Pentney
Governor District VIII

2015 Golf Tournament
Twenty eight members of the Sherwood Park Gyro Club gathered this afternoon at the Belvedere Golf Club to enjoy the beautiful weather, enjoy each others friendship, and to attempt to play the game of golf.
When all was said and done, Jack Beattie had the lowest gross score while Jeff Malott had the lowest net score. The low team net went to the team of Sid Slade, Erik Braun, Dorne Hunt, and Ray Davis.
Everyone gathered upstairs at the Belvedere for supper and reliving the afternoon. Keith Bradley was in charge of the prizes which saw everyone receive something. The lottery for the top three prizes and 50/50 dollars was a good addition and enjoyed by all.
Pictures from this afternoons festivities can be found by clicking here.

Horseshoe Winners
Approximately 30 members met at the South Cooking Lake horseshoe pits on June 10. Twenty-four members showed their “prowess” in pitching shoes, well at least getting 50% of the shoes in the pit. In pitching the shoes. Greg Clark & Herb Zmurchuk were A-Event winners with Pres. Ray Davis & Lloyd Wilson coming back from a 10 to 5 dificiet to win the B-event. Thanks to Sid Slade for picking up the pizza, Jack Beattie for the beer, & Richard Dickinson for the pop. As usual this all provided for a good mosquito free evening of Gyro friendship.

2015 District VIII Convention
Four Sherwood Park Gyro couples (Copeland’s,Kropp’s, Malott’s, & Merrick’s) joined 71 other Gyros & Gyrettes from around District VIII in Fairmont the weekend of May 21 – May 24, 2015 for fun and friendship. The weekend started with a golf tournament Thursday morning for those so masochistically inclined, followed by the first of many hospitality sessions. The group from Nelson made sure that no one went wanting for “liquids to quench their thirst” or a place to visit and enjoy Gyro friendship through out the weekend. Our thanks for their great hospitality.
Friday was started off with a poker car rally/tour of the Valley followed by a Bocce tournament won by “Girl Power” led by Norma Vingo.
A highlight of the weekend was the “Pirates of Panorama” themed banquet on Friday evening which saw all those gathered reliving their childhood dressed in pirate costume. A special thank you to Derm Jackman for providing the music both Thursday and Friday evening.
Saturday morning was dedicated to the business of District VIII for the men while the women enjoyed brunch followed by an afternoon of hospitality and visiting. The Governor’s banquet and ball on Saturday evening saw our own Jim Malott retire from District VIII executive and John Hodgson sworn in as 1st lieutenant governor via Skype (a first for Canada) and dancing to L8. And, who couldn’t pass up a dip in the hot tub before retiring for the evening.
The weekend frivolity concluded with everyone gathering for the the float-away breakfast with lots of farewells until next year.
If you haven’t already, please mark you calendars for the weekend of May26 to 29, 2016 and join us in Fairmont for next years convention and more of the same fun and friendship. If you haven’t travelled to a convention you are missing out on a large portion of what your Gyro membership has to offer.
