Founders Night & 40 Year

I quite enjoyed listening to the founding members of our club sharing some of their thoughts on how it came about 40 years ago. Thanks Augie, Terry, John and Barry, you guys are the backbone of our organization and we are better for it. Thanks

Vic so sorry to hear of your step fathers passing, we had just chatted about him at our recent Gyro meeting. While it may be a blessing, I know you will have good memories of him. Will be thinking of you on the day of the funeral.

Founder’s Night

Considering how late in October Founder’s Night was scheduled, we had a very good turnout on the evening ofWednesday October 28; 17 from Edmonton Club, 2 from Edmonton Crossroads and 27 from Sherwood Park. Members from the Edmonton Club remarked that the total attendance was more this year than they had last year when it included their spouses. The German Club served up a great meal of your choice of steak & prawns or salmon with all the trimmings.

Guess Who @ the Braun’s

Sid & Sharon  Slade and Jim & Eleanor Copeland arrived at the Braun’s promptly at 7:00 pm with their appetizers in hand. We then discussed all of the social issues facing society today along with bemoaning the choices offered in the upcoming federal election. We then gathered around the dining room table for a game of Dominos / Mexican Train. As usual, everyone had played according to a different set of rules with no one knowing what the correct rules were.

The evening concluding with Andre offering tea or coffee to accompany the delicious cake she had made with of course whipped cream on top.

A big thank you to the Braun’s for being our hosts and to Jan Clarke for organizing the evening.

Race Night was Great

Screen Shot 2015-10-01 at 8.59.06 PMKudos to Peter Sachatsky and his team for a great night at the races. Nice to see Sherwood Park Gyro highlighted in the scoreboard. I’m sure the losses were small and not too hard to take. I know our table pool betting cleared $8.75 on a $6.00 investment. And as Cora says which bank would give you that type of return on your dollars! Greg and Ray figured out how to read the program in time to make the right call on a couple of exactas and came away with enough to pay for dinner and drinks. Good fun, thanks again guys.

I want to offer an opinion on the recent district convention and our club’s participation. As everyone knows GYRO is a “bottom up” type of organization. That is each club has a constitution of it’s own with a district and international constitution above that. Many of the members of GYRO have no interest outside of their participation in their clubs activities. That is normal but does not diminish the importance of being part of a larger organization and affiliation with other GYRO clubs. How important is GYRO district VIII or international to our club? Do we see value in being part of that organization? That was shown when a healthy club of some 75 members in Tacoma Washington voted to return their charter to GYRO and be a stand alone club. Is this the direction our club is moving? We had 4 members attend the recent district convention and for a club of 50 that is poor attendance. I think a lot of members miss out on what GYRO has to offer beyond the club and that is unfortunate. There are a lot of incredibly interesting people in other clubs we can get to know. I would suggest our club hold some discussions on our role in GYRO beyond our club, that is not to say we have not done our share of the work. We have had a member on district executive for the last 12 consecutive years. Erik Braun then Bernie Kropp then Jim Malott each for 4 years. They were preceded by Keith Bradley and Don Greig. I would suggest the club executive consider a line item in next years budget not to exceed $500.00 to provide as subsidy of $50.00/ per member attending convention to see if this will help get more members at future conventions.
