Curl-a-rama Banff November

Three teams from Sherwood Park took part in the annual Gyro curl-a-rama in Banff in November this past weekend. Team 1 was lead by Lloyd Wilson with Jim Mallot, Roger Delveaux, and Ted Ewanchuk after a disappointing start they started winning, playing four games (six ends) on Saturday and went into the semi final where they were down by three in the final end and skip Wilson came through with a four ender to win the game and advance to the final on Sunday where they crushed their opposition to win the C event final.

Team 2 was Bill Austin, Ray Davis, Don Greig, and Paul West. Losing the first game woke us up and we followed through with consecutive wins taking us to the semi final of B event on Sunday morning. A good close game came down to the last rock of the final end needing a draw to the four foot to tie the game, accomplished. Then down to the skips drawing to the button for the win, accomplished. On to the final and another win for Sherwood Park 2 Event B winners.

Team 3 was lead by Milt Lanes supported by Dick Caddey, Dorne Hunt, and Art Merrick. Another rocky start saw them drop through the ranks to the D event where they followed their leader into the final on Sunday with the third event win by a Sherwood Park Team.

Great event, lots of fun. Converted a rusty nail virgin and listened to the sixth end story endlessly from a slightly inebriated skip. Now where do we keep three trophies???

Update on Bill Carter

Hi all, I talked to Jeanne again today and she advises Bill is still holding his own. He remains in ICU and therefore No Visitors. She will advise when he is up to seeing friends when he is out of ICU.

After his initial surgery on Monday night, he again underwent another surgery on Wednesday to install an Ileostomy which will assist him in collecting bowel activity.

His Blood Pressure is quite high and they are monitoring that.

He has a breathing tube which he is not comfortable with but is necessary.

All of this is complicated by the fact that he has Diabetes.

Jeanne was finally able to return home last night and gain some much needed sleep. This was only made possible because they sedated Bill to sleep last night – he has been busy fighting the breathing tube in his sleep.

We know both Bill and Jeanne are fighters but you will agree they have been handed a full plate this year. Bill’s surgery this coming Thursday to remove his Colostomy has now been postponed….

When I know more, I’ll send it along to you.

Bocce Good Times at Kleebaum’s

Thanks so much to the Kleebaum’s for a great day playing Bocce with our Gyro friends. Gary did a great job of cooking the beef on a bun. Thanks to Jim and Sid also for all their help with the event. Sid did a great job of running the tournament. Weather was perfect, food was great, games were super, and the friendship fantastic.

Thanks, Lynn and Ray

Texas Hold’em

A good evening of fun and BS. Nineteen Gyro’s wagered away the evening after a good buffet meal at the Canadian German Cultural Centre. Lawrence and Earl did a good job of keeping us on the straight and narrow way. The first round saw the losing nine move to a table of their own while the 10 top moved to a second round at their own table. Scott (the uni-bomber)was the winner of table “A” taking home the big paycheque, Ray cleaned up second place while Dorne got his money back for third place. The best of the losers was Dick followed by Gary Jones and Terry got his entry fee back for his third place finish.

The rest of the nineteen when home disappointed and in my case I had to listen to my “good neighbour Lloyd” wine the whole way home.

Bowling

Another good evening coordinated by Bill Carter. Four teams of five bowlers challenged each other for supremacy. In the end the Bill Carter team (Lloyd, Bruce, Al Gordon, and Dorne) won the bubbly and hardware, beating out the Milt Lanes team (Ray, Lawrence, Scott, and our newest member Les). Bill made sure we were able to order our meals while bowling so we were able to eat between games giving everyone the stamina to compete, especially Lloyd who blew the completion away with two amazing games even giving the Pro (Bill Carter) a run for his money. Well done Lloyd. And thanks again to Bill for a great evening.

Bernie’s Founders Night Presentation

Bernie did an excellant job of the presentation last night (Oct. 25th)at the mixed founders night held at Belvedere Golf Club. So we thought it would be nice to add it to our web site for all those who couldn’t make last night and wish to enjoy his wit and wisdom.

Cheers Ray

Bocce Night

Last night Sherwood Park and Edmonton Gyro clubs enjoyed a very successful joint bocce evening at the Ital Canadian Seniors Centre. With a bocce tournament as the theme, we enjoyed great fellowship and a fine meal. Fifty members participated (27 SP and 23 Edmonton). The teams were organized so that 2 SP and 2 Edmonton Gyros or guests were on each team. The winning team consisted of SP – Gordon Stewart and Lloyd Wilson and Edm- Fred Schulte and Dave Burnett. The W. H. Wilson trophy was presented to the SP twosome and the Gordon Rennie trophy was presented to the Edm twosome. A bottle of Italian wine was the prize for each of the foursome. All expressed a desire to make this an annual event. Edmonton club (Mike Matei) offered to organize next year’s event.

Horse Races

A good evening was had by 19 Gyros and 17 spouses at Northlands tonight. Good meal lots of betting, little winning but all and all not a bad night at all. We had a table of six, pooled $5 each and took turns betting, the four guys made money, the two women however came up a little short. The last and seventh race we took the profits bet heavy and walked away with a whopping $2 each. Good start to the Gyro season, thanks for joining me there.

Cheers Ray

Mystery Golf Tournament

It was a great day at the Trestle Golf Course just down the Yellowed Highway. Twenty four golfers (3 guests) enjoyed the course, the day, the steaks and the fellowship. Congrats to John Williams and Ray Davis as the par points overall winning team. Seemed to hear a little wining about the undulating greens, but only from those that didn’t win anything!!!

A big thanks to Bill Austin and Dorne Hunt for the organization of the event. Thanks guys.
